Lock your doors at night....

Pressing a button on the key unlocks all of th...Image via Wikipedia

Okay, Rick is on vacation and we do not want the Opinion column to go unheard and dormant. With that said there is a small summer scandal that happens every year that must be talked about. It all started when I was in 12th grade....

I know it sounds like a life story doesn't it. I was in 12th grade and grew up on the famous Nikki Ct. off of Sunset. I was much like many other teenagers in the area I had a massive sound system that you could hear a mile away and the kind that my mom couldn't sit in the car because it would hurt her chest. But I loved that system and it was nice to cruise blasting and bumping down the road. Of course, at the level that is not against police standards of public disturbance.

Anyhow, this is Carlisle and who in Carlisle feels unsafe enough to not lock their car doors at night. Well, it was not uncommon that I did not lock my doors and I know it left me open to anyone walking by and seeing what I had inside.

It was a hot and steamy summer and I awoke to go to my car for school. I jumped in my ride and looked around for my CD's and to my dismay THEY WERE GONE! Now, it just happened that this night I had my entire collection in my car due to an event I went to the day previous. I usually only had a few CD's in my visor holder. So in a hot steamy summer night my entire collection of CD's about 120 were whisked away.

Fast forward, I am still in Carlisle its not so hot this summer but all the same. I still haven't learned to lock my doors but hey its Carlisle, right? Yesterday morning I awoke and headed to my car to go to work. I opened my door to find that everything had been pulled out of my gym bag and everything had been pulled out of my consoles. I looked around nothing from what I could tell was taken so I went to work. I called my wife on my way in to the office and she took a look at, that's right, our unlocked van that was in the driveway. Low and behold they had rummaged through our van console and drug everything out. Again, nothing seemed to be missing.

Now to my opinion, I believe it is some very bored kids running around at night. Again, this is my opinion. Why do I say that. Well, even way back when my CD's were stolen when I was younger till now the culprits didn't seem to be looking for much more than potentially little things or money. I have to confess and I obviously will not list what I have in the car but the little culprits could have made out very well two nights ago but instead just decided to trash my car and van. And back when I was in school could have made out with my entire radio, sound system, etc. but instead just took the CD's and some change.

Last summer, I was speaking with some neighborhood friends and they had mentioned to me that their car had been gone through. The friend had an iPod and many other valuable things but the car was just rummaged and trashed and some change from the console had been taken. So again, my little evidence to support my opinion.

With this story I just want to encourage everyone in Carlisle and any community for that matter to lock your car doors at night if you have the misfortune of not being able to get them into the garage. You never can trust or tell what might happen while your sound asleep feeling all safe in your home. It is unfortunate that we have to deal with this and it seems I hear a story like this every summer but it is what it is and I just hope that you take the precautions to protect your items.

I digress.

i always lock my doors....there are bad people everywhere. And with the economy the way it is, people are looking for anyway to get money to save their homes, and feed their kids if they are in a tight spot.

I grew up in one of the less savory areas of Carlisle, yes there are a few. Now we didn't exactly live in the ghetto, just a street over from it, and from the time I was big enough to be able to close car doors on my own my mother would always say, "Lock the doors!" It happend one night, I was about 6 or 7 so this was '86 or '87, and our van was broken into. They only got about 1.50$ in change and a few cassete tapes, but it still was enough to scare the crap out of me and my mom. They had also broken into my dad's truck taking some of the auto parts he was storing to work on said truck that weekend. So even back in the "day" I have ALWAYS locked my car and house up at night in Carlisle.

Actually, my car was vandalized just last night... in Chautauqua. They didn't get much but this is the 2nd time in a year. I usually lock my car, but yesterday I deviated from my "get home from work" routine and missed the step when I click the locks. Came out this morning and my console and glove comparments were open and my change cup was gone. They didn't get much, but that's not the point - who do they think they are?? Punk Trash, that's all they are!

I have always locked our car/house at night. I grew up in Carlisle as well and I still live in Carlisle. We have never had an incident per say, but it's always better safe than sorry.
Like the previous comment, even people in a small community are looking for a way to provide for their families in today's society. Even if it means stealing. That is why they make locks on cars/houses. Be smart and use them.

Yesterday (7/9)I founda personsdrivers liscense in our fenced backyard. I was able to trace them down nd contacted them about finding it here.
Thy live in a subdivision close by and they too were victims of this rash of car break-ins. Later i was talking to some of my neighbors and foud out that on of them had too been victims. I guess that we hae caught up with outside world.

I now live in Kettering and this happened in my neighborohood too. They caught the people responsible. Turns out it was the trash collectors. Nobody notices because it was not unsual for them to be there around the houses and cars befroe daylight.

There was also a house on Oak that was burglarized while the women slept and a truck stolen on Chestnut last week. So indeed lock your doors and put some lights on outside!!!

The failure of Carlisle Police Dept. to keep the citizens apprised of these crimes by not informing them thru (every means) availible is just another flaw that costs me and you when it comes time to pay our insurance preminums. Shame on you Mr. Police Chief for not having the drive to report the police log to the Middletown Journal or Franklin Chronicle or run it on the TV 15 and 22 govt.channel They all are free. Come on Carlisle Goverment officials, see if anyone can light a fire under the Chief and get some action on this issue. A.S.A.P. P.S. Before the crackheads come thru our front doors.

As a citizen of Carlisle, I don't believe it's the Police Department's fault at all. I believe we have a very well put together department with excellent faculty. Every citizen should do their part to report suspicious activity, and THAT is how you cut down on crime. If you see it or hear it, report it. It's that simple. Stop looking for someone to blame, take your own measures of security, and do your part.

In my opinion it is real hard to be in Franklin Ohio getting your dinner and enforcing the law in Carlisle at the same time. Next time pack your lunch or patronize Carlisle's food outlets. That's a good way to cut down on crime also and save some of that taxpayer gasoline you are burning up running to Franklin and back.

I think a neighborhood watch program could help with prevention and notification. See more at:

Do the citizens of Carlisle really think it is OK for one of our cops (on duty) to go to Franklin and spend a few hours eating and shooting the bull on our tax dollars ???????????? Out of his Jurisdiction.(YES) Did he join Carlisle's Dept. or Franklin's Dept. Maybe our City Manager should send somebody in Franklin a bill for using our cops at nite. Or maybe Our City Mgr.should exert some management skills and gain control of the police dept.before the city gets sued (again). P.S. Tell the cop if he is good enough maybe Larry Sims will hire him and then he can go anywhere in the county to eat. What a Circus we have in Carlisle, Now I must say this is only my opinion and my views expressed with best intentions for those mentioned.
